The curriculum includes, on the one hand, a case for combining general or rally-oriented basic training with an introduction to the world of children’s table tennis. On the other hand, *Ballschule Tischtennis* follows a competency-based approach, in which the basic techniques are viewed as solutions to tasks for the phases of serve and return, the table as an obstacle & opening, and open play. “Playing together” plays a key role from the very beginning. In the book’s extensive practical section, building-block games, building-block exercises, and sequence concepts are presented to improve a total of 23 coordinative (A), perceptual-motor (B), and technical-tactical (C) skills—which, taken together, form the ABCs of table tennis for beginners.

For most sports, there are defined ideal techniques. But when you look at the world’s top athletes in these sports, you’ll notice that they achieve absolute peak performance using very different technical approaches. I first came across ActionTypes® in 2014. The concept discussed different movement types that required different techniques, and emphasized that technical execution should be adapted to the athlete’s individual body—not the other way around, as is usually taught. Different personalities require a different approach and way of interacting. The fact that, as a coach or teammate, I “get along better” with one person than with another is something we’ve all experienced. But now, through the ActionTypes® methodology, I’ve learned to distinguish between different personalities and take their respective needs into account. This has enabled me to work with players in a much more individualized and tailored way—both in terms of technical development and the methods used for instruction and coaching. This item is not eligible for a discount and cannot be returned In critical competition situations, it is essential to competently manage one’s own actions. Emotions, motivation, concentration, anticipation, and motor control—all of which are interconnected in many ways—must be regulated. To achieve this, the athlete must be able to halt suboptimal processes and replace them with more efficient ones. Through self-analysis, the athlete identifies problems in their own behavioral control. They interrupt unfavorable chains of action with “stop codes” and replace them with new behaviors. Since psychological processes related to action occur in the blink of an eye, simple “self-talk” is of little help. Rather, conscious intervention in one’s own action control must be systematically trained. The book also includes an audio file that can be used during competition and training. Drawing on the training methods of the U.S. Navy SEALs as a starting point, Manfred Baum explains how he prepares for and adapts to rapidly changing situations and opponents before and during a match. However, he doesn’t do this through military-style drill, but rather through a great deal of empathy, keen observation and analytical skills, playing experience, and an understanding of the mental challenges faced by a table tennis player. A key focus of the book is table tennis methodology. • How do I design an engaging and motivating training session for beginners and advanced players? • How do you learn and improve stroke and footwork techniques, particularly serve and return variations? • What does effective, age-appropriate error correction look like? • How do you train and improve anticipation and perception skills, e.g., for “reading” serves? • How do you train tactics—specifically serve and return tactics? These questions are answered, along with questions regarding physical conditioning, coordination, psychology, coaching, and training organization. Numerous tips and tricks, as well as tried-and-true game formats and drills, are illustrated and described.

That’s right—ultimately, it’s not just about being technically superior to your opponent, but also about defeating them using the right strategies. Here you’ll learn the most important things about table tennis tactics—that is, how the stroke techniques you have to practice over and over again can actually be used to win. Table Tennis Tactics • brings together all aspects of table tennis tactics for young players in an age-appropriate way. • It helps players read their opponent’s game and decide how to adapt their own play—for example, against forehand- or backhand-dominant players. • In addition, it offers valuable tips on how to use the pace of the game as a tactical element, how to generate, recognize, and influence the ball’s spin with the right rubber, and how to use the serve to shape the game tactically. • With numerous photos and illustrations, a self-assessment questionnaire, profiles of the best table tennis players, the official rules, and the “Tactical Foxes” who guide readers through the book, it will become a constant companion for your own table tennis game.
